Who waits to have two months off from school? Who wants to have homework and attend classes during the summer? The answer to those questions are everyone and no one.

It’s understandable that parents will hear many reasons from their children for why NOT to have summer classes, but perhaps this article will change not only their minds but yours as well.

During the school year, students are exposed to many topics and often, there isn’t enough time for teachers to provide additional explanations. This is simply due to the expectations that the curriculum outlines. There aren’t many opportunities for teachers to attend to each student and ensure they are understanding the content presented. Therefore, the student is left feeling confused, stressed, and behind. On top of that, the teacher has now moved on to the next topic, which requires foundational knowledge from the previous lesson leaving the student feeling overwhelmed and even more unsure of what they are supposed to do.

So the question remains of whether or not you should enrol your children in summer classes and the shortest answer is “Yes!”

Summer classes allow students to reflect on the school year and revisit topics which they found difficult. In our centre, for example, our summer classes are organized in groups of no more than four students. In these small group classes, students work with their peers and their educator and review the topics they struggled with during the school year. Since class sizes are small, there are plenty of opportunities to provide in-depth explanations and work on extra assignments pertaining to the topic in question.

Realistically, the topics studied throughout the year will only get more complex in the next grade, so taking the initiative and attending summer classes can’t be the worst idea. Also, two - three hours a week will not ruin one's summer; instead, these several hours will be extremely beneficial and rewarding!
